"Decoded" is a series of 9 short films created by filmmaker Chap Edmonson; where I share about the paintings commissioned by Holy Family HTX in 2017. In each film I share about the creative process, inspiration + more for the featured painting. The “Christmastide” short film is the 1st of 9 I will share with you throughout this year. The next, “Epiphany,” will on my website journal Wednesday, January 9. Feel free to leave questions sparked by the video below in the comments + I will respond. -Wait No More- By Alexandra Lane The waiting has been a steady bridge between past, present, and future. Stars lighting this path of expectation for that long-ago promised heel. A heel imagined attached to conqueror’s body, born on the back of a warhorse. God among us but not one of us. But instead-- this heel is small and wrinkled, the skin not yet needing to stretch to hold the Servant King’s feet, born rather in a horse’s trough. What grand reversal is this? That the One who knit the elements together-- neurons, protons, and electrons forming the backbone to life-created-- is now bound by them. Carbon-Creator becomes carbon-bound for the sake of this carbon-based world. For this world, it seems the waiting is over, and yet, not quite finished-- For now, we wait with a Hope that cracks open the stars-- bleeding gold to cover the brokenness. A Hope that calls to heaven, to earth, it’s kingdoms, and to us-- and says, God is here. He has become one of us. The wait for Him, at last, is over. The wait for redemption begins anew. By: Alexandra Lane Spare me the overworked platitudes-- patience is a virtue? But, what about when patience feels like a vulture, scavenging the deserted soul for sustenance? Or time will heal all wounds? Then why have I spent so long reaching for words to bind these wounds and all it seems I grasp is Your silence? In that taciturn darkness, whispers of Abandoned slither around wrists and ankles like shackles. My soul tires of this endless expectation. Never sure when; never sure how; never sure who. Even still, Hope wrestles Doubt in my chest. Though her voice quivers, she counters, Not abandoned, to Doubt’s vicious hiss. She whispers, He is coming, as she digs in her heels for another battle. And, my worn and weary soul waits for it to be so. Copyright 2018. Must the permission of Alex Lane before printing or publishing this poem. Untitled, 2018 Acrylic, acrylic gouache, paper, charcoal on raw cotton canvas Approximately: 18in x 40in Inspired by the poem -I Wait- by Alexandra Lane -Kingdom Waits- By: Alexandra Lane Imposter kings dot the map. They draw their borders in blood. Build up walls with broken dreams and empty promises of peace. But, these swords cannot repair the very wounds they create. They know they rule from a borrowed throne; and so, they claim legitimacy with oppression and fear. Their necks twisted-- waiting and watching for the next pretender in line to take the fool’s gold crown from their heads. But in the quiet, they wonder about the King history whispers of-- the One who commands heaven and earth with no army but Himself. The barefoot ruler who bears nations upon his shoulders. Rather than watch their backs-- instead, for Him, they watch the stars. Copyright 2018. Must the permission of Alex Lane before printing or publishing this poem. Title of painting: Love Knows, 2018
Acrylic, acrylic gouache, pastel, newspaper, canvas thread + barbed wire on raw cotton canvas Approximately: 18in x 40in Inspired by the poem -Kingdom Waits- by Alex Lane Advent: Week 2
This is the 2nd of 4 works within the Advent collaboration between poet, Alex Lane + me. We were commission by a community in Raleigh, NC, to create companion pieces for them to add to their journey through the season of Advent. The Creative Process: Alex weaves together words informed by the Advent story. I then sit with her words— soak them in + create a piece inspired by her poem, the Advent narratives of the community + my own. The final painting is at home with the Southeast Raleigh Table for the community to engage upclose; along with this video Alex has created utilizing photographs I took of my creative process for each piece. It is a privilege to be able to share this piece of art with you. |
